SpaceX Raptor 2 keeps exploding pushing back the first orbital flight of the powerful Starship further.
In the last episode, we also explained about 33-raptor engine testing is a big problem for SpaceX and Elon Musk.
We received a lot of comments related to “Should’ve used 33 Merlins bro” or why does SpaceX have to make it so complicated?
However, there are some wild secrets behind Elon Musk’s methane-guzzling super-rocket.
And this is why we have today’s episode: ” Elon Musk’s real reason for Developed The insane Raptor 2 Engine!”

Welcome back to the Alpha tech. We’d also like to take the time to thank you for your continued support of our channel. Let’s grab your favorite drink and dive into today’s interesting topic:

The Raptor engine has been in development for the better part of a decade, going through a number of iterations. At its core, it’s like other engines, burning chemical fuel to produce thrust. But what Musk is upgrading for Raptor 2 is really burning all scientist’s minds.

Most visible, its use of liquid oxygen and methane – something largely unprecedented in the rocket industry – and its innovative design means that it just might be SpaceX’s ace in the hole when it comes to exploring the Solar System.

Honestly, there is no other rocket engine capable of producing as much energy out of liquid methane and liquid oxygen as the Raptor engine. And making it more reusable with little to no refurbishment is the idea. That’s definitely going to help their business case if they can just fly over and over.

  1. Reality check: Not one Raptor 2 engine has ever flown. Starship fully loaded has 30+ of these, that all need to not explode. The Russian N1 rocket had fewer engines, and when it exploded, was the biggest explosion in rocket history, and still is. Starship and it's booster is larger than the N1 rocket. The damage from the N1 rocket explosion was so bad, it put the Russian launch pad out of commission for years. If Startship explodes, the entire complex will be leveled. So, untested engines, biggest rocket in history, comparatively tiny complex… not to mention wacko way of landing trying to catch it… one word: BOOM!

  2. Given the vast resources SpaceX is pouring into this project, and the several radical innovations, Starship/Super-Heavy/Raptor 2 may just be the biggest gamble in the history of rocketry. What are the odds of success? What are the odds of at least partial success? Given what SpaceX is aiming for, Starship could fall well short of its performance/cost objectives and still be superior to any existing rocket. We shall see, and buckle your seatbelts.

  3. correction: 300 bar of pressure isn't directly tied to thrust. Raptor 2 makes ~500,000lbs force. 300 bar is more or less 300 * 15psi.

  4. Hmm why do you think the Raptor2 is insane? I wander how do you determine the mental health of a rocket engine?

  5. Fukkit, marked as “not interested”. Tired of stupid channels that say everything is INSANE.

  6. Fun fact: Full-flow staged combustion engines have been tried twice before. Once by the Russians and once by the Americans. Both attempts failed. It is insanely efficient.

  7. Raptor 2 doesn't "keep exploding". You showed the recent explosion beneath the booster that was caused by an ignition source setting off the combination of gases produced during the spin test. That wasn't a "raptor exploding".

  10. I love they are using methane. Do you have any idea how much meathane comes off a large cattle farm.
